12u Stewards Team Finds Success in Aberdeen

The 12 & U Spring Challenge Team made a successful trip to Aberdeen, MD for the Cal Ripken Memorial Day Tournament. Twenty 12&U teams from NY, NJ, PA, MD, DE, VA, and NC competed in the weekend tournament. In addition to the great baseball, the weekend was a fantastic hit including steamed crabs, a tour of Oriole Park at Camden Yards and dinner at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore.

The Stewards team swept both games on Saturday defeating the Columbia Red Storm, of Columbia MD, 10-0 and the Central Jersey Giants 14-5. While both victories were total team efforts, the highlight was 5 home runs hit in a row by Ian Edmiston. Ian's last at-bat against the Red Storm was a homer and all four of his at-bats against the Giants were home runs. In addition, Eric Ellis was 5 for 6 in these two games (also one walk), scoring 6 runs, and Clayton Calvert was 3 for 3 with 3 walks, scoring 6 runs. Troy Lowden and Justin Moore got the wins on the mound, while AJ Girting and Ian Edmiston also pitched well.

On Sunday, the first game was against the Norlando Redbirds, of Lancaster PA at Fenway Park. Stewards led midway in the 5th 4-2 after a superb pitching effort by Troy Lowden. Ian Edmiston hit his 6th homerun in the tournament and his 6th in a row when he homered in the 1st inning. The game was a classic pitching and defensive struggle. In the bottom of the 5th, Norlanco hit a two run homer, tying the game and went on to win 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh. After coming off the emotional game against the Redbirds, Stewards lost their second Sunday game against the Baltimore Buzz at the beautiful Cal Sr. Field (replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards).

For the weekend, Ian Edmiston hit 6 homers, 1 triple, 9 hits, slugging % of 2231.00, and batted .692. Eric Ellis was 7 for 12, batting .583. Clayton Calvert batted .500, Justin Moore batted .333, and Chris High batted .300. On the mound, Troy Lowden and Justin Moore were both 1-0 with both having tournament ERAs under 2.80. Ian Edmiston, AJ Girting, Jack Edmiston, and Eric Ellis also contributed on the mound.

Next up is all-stars for most of these boys, then on to Cooperstown NY for a tournament the week of August 5th.
