.The Stewards of the Game
12 & Under All-Star baseball team won the Cal Ripken WNC Area 3 All-Star
Tournament held June 26-July 2 in Troutman and Mooresville. By winning this
tournament they have qualified for the Cal Ripken WNC state tournament to be
held at the Field of Dreams Park in Polkton, NC July 7-11. The Stewards
team is made up of players from Huntersville, Charlotte, and Mooresville.
Stewards’ first victory in the tournament was 10-0 against the Surry West
All-Stars. Their next game was an 11-4 win over China Grove. Stewards’
only loss in the tournament followed with a 10-9 extra-inning game against
the Yadkin County All-Stars. The Stewards team then bounced back with
victories of 11-4 over North Piedmont South, 8-7 against Yadkin County, and
finally defeating Yadkin County again in the championship game 1-0.
By finishing second in the tournament, Yadkin County
also qualified for the state tournament. During this area tournament
Stewards and Yadkin played three times with each game decided by only one
run.
Highlights for Stewards during the tournament
included:
On the mound, Ian Edmiston was 3-0 with 3 saves,
pitching 14 innings without giving up any runs. Justin Moore was 1-0 ,
pitching 10 1/3 innings with a tournament ERA of 1.16. At the plate,
Ian Edmiston batted .727, including 4 doubles and one home run. Danny
LiCause batted .714, Troy Lowden batted .429 including a home run, Chris
High batted .444, Justin Moore and Christian Solorzano each batted .400,
Eric Ellis batted .381 including 2 home runs, and Jack Edmiston batted .333
including a home run.
The team moves to the state tournament with their
first game Saturday, July 8th at noon against the Erwin, NC
All-Stars. They will also play Saturday at 4:00 and then two more games on
Sunday, July 9th at 11:00 and 3:00. Depending on the outcome of
these 4 games, they could also play on Monday July 10 and Tuesday, July 11th.
