The regular season ended in
early June, but Stewards 10u All-Stars and Challenge players had a lot of
baseball left to play. The 10u All-Stars placed 3rd in the Ripken Area 2
tournament and earned a birth in the single elimination tournament of all
3rd place area winners for a chance to go to state. Stewards made it
to the championship game of this tournament and held a lead late, but lost a
close fought battle to Davidson County.
Next a group of 10u players participated in a
July USSSA tournament and lost the opening game to a tough Carolina
Copperheads team, but closed out strong with 3 wins and a third place finish.
Finally, a Stewards 10u
challenge team placed 2nd in the Carolina Challenge Baseball
league July 28 tournament. Highlights from game 1 saw the Stewards
team play stellar defense with excellent pitching from starter Richard
Landis. That
combined with timely hitting led to a 15-6 victory over CoulOak. In
game 2 a hot
Indian Trails team shut down the Stewards offense en route to a 8-1 win.
Game 3 action saw the Stewards offense back in gear with a close 9-6 victory over a
very good Steele Creek team. That placed the Stewards team in the
championship game on Sunday against CoulOak.
Stewards began the championship game
down a key player as standout short-stop Justin Elliot had a previous
commitment and was not available. CoulOak come out of the gate fast
and gained an early 6-0 lead. Stewards battled back and quickly tied
the score at 6, however CoulOak finally prevailed with a 12-7 win.
Throughout most of the tournament the
Stewards team showed a patient attack with a great on-base-percentage,
taking walks and pouncing aggressively on thrown strikes. A number of
hitters, including Justin Elliott, Dillon Rowan, Richard Landis, Joe Bryant,
Chase Loomer, and Kenny Bumgarner all had an OBP over .500. Frankie
Walsh lead with 5 hits including a key bases clearing double in the
championship game. Defensively Stewards played well with short-stop
Justin Elliot turning several double plays. Catcher Chase Loomer also was extremely effective helping the pitching staff
doing an excellent job of blocking balls in the dirt. Overall,
there was much to be proud of for our 10u
group of players this past season.
