IT'S A SLAM DUNK WITH STEWARDS: WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE PLAYEREvery successful youth basketball program must provide each player the opportunity to become the best basketball player he is capable of becoming. As each individual is blessed with different abilities and talents, this implies providing fair, but not always the same opportunities, for each player to strive to achieve his own personal best. Moreover, it is during the struggle to achieve this personal success that lasting life lessons like perseverance, self-confidence, and humility are learned. Stewards of the Game, or any youth sports program, can only build these important character traits and lasting life lessons within a framework that encourages and challenges each individual to become the best he is capable of becoming. Growth, be it physical or spiritual, requires struggle. Romans 5: 3-5 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. In order for players to be given this opportunity, age-appropriate fundamentals and sound basketball principles must be at the very foundation of basketball instruction.
